My Father eventually died but not before enduring a long suffered very painful trial due to prostate cancer.
My nephew also died of a very vicious fast attacking cancer.
Preceded by my brother, his Father.
And then my sister-in-law his Wife and Mom to my deceased nephew also passed shortly thereafter of cancer.
Four family members gone in a matter of months.
My Father-in-law suffered a very long time before dying of cancer.
So the number climbed to 5 within a couple of years.
By some miracle I survived a HUGE malignant tumor on my right kidney, which was removed and I suffered no ill after effects and have remained cancer free for 17 years thus far Praise be to God.
Did I deserve to survive? By my own estimation and understanding in complete honesty, absolutely not!
And it would not be the first nor the last time I would live through such a trial…grace?
There was a time I would have attributed it to luck or good fortune or chance or coincidence.
But I have come to reject all those beliefs invalid and “erroneous” as a flawed, imperfect, rather crude, still rough around the edges uncouthed, still being refined, but yet staunch believer in Christ nonetheless in spite of my-“self.”
Some people don’t know how to approach this level of suffering and pain.
If one has never suffered through it for themselves it can be difficult to witness or draw near to.
But draw near to we must.
When my wife returned from her Father’s funeral the phone rang, Jody picked up the phone and it was a “telemarketer”. Boy, you would not have wanted to be on the receiving end of what Jody dished out!
My point is, if you know someone who is suffering right now…call or visit.
Don’t make excuses or procrastinate you’ll live to regret it, thoroughly examine that rationale holding you back with excuses for flaws.
Telemarketers use a device called “demon” dialers which randomly and indiscriminantly call people to try to sell them something.
The phone is gonna’ ring unless the ringer is turned off, so why not call?
Yes, you might wake up someone who’s only relief from pain is sleeping but is that really a good excuse not to call or visit?
“Demon” dialers don’t hesitate to wake someone up for dishonorable purposes, why not wake someone up if we must and let them know that they are cherished and loved?
Mormons and Jehovah’s witnesses at times blanket my neighborhood and suffer no guilt or shame, no hesitation whatsoever to ring doorbells and I live on a “posted” privately owned road with a sign that says “no trespassing or soliciting”, just the same tele-marketers and hard core bill collectors don’t hesitate to call either. Even though we are on a “do not call list” and our phone number is private, they aggressively persevere.
These are exactly the times when mercy, compassion and forgiveness are needed, sometimes it may even help us towards realizing how much we need forgiving ourselves.
