Answer machines are my only friends

I pick up the phone

I dial a number; unimportant

I talk to myself and wait for the tone

No one is ever in

Do I want them to be – I don’t know?

I pray they answer, but they never do

It’s always the same whenever I call

I could be in hospital after a fall

I could be younger with a broken heart

In need of advice from the man at the mini-mart

But I’m not – I’m old

I sit at bus queues and talk of the past

About the cost of today and the life – how fast

I can only afford the single phone

I have no family

The answer machines are my only friends

I’m just old, tired…and mostly alone

DINNER

man alonexxxxxxxxxxxx

There is a man sitting
In a table
Just him.
Around him are couples
And friends
Enjoying
And eating dinner
Typical restaurant
On any given night.
This man
I watch him as he sits there
Expensive shoes
Fancy named shirt
Always on his phone
Speaking to different people
I can’t quite hear what they are
Talking about
Sounds like business rather
Than friends
He’s showing everyone
How important he is
Always chatting
Can’t even put it down when the girl
Brings him his food.
Yes he is so busy
And so important
He dines alone.
So I switch my gaze
I see a man outside
Glasses like
Eric Clapton from his unplugged album
In fact the whole outfit looks like
That
Very 1992
I liked his style until
I see
The gold chain worn on the
Outside of the t shirt
That kind of ruined it for me a bit
He decides not to come in anyway
And the business man has finished
And paid his bill.
Maybe I judged him
Harshly
He might enjoy eating by himself
But I think I would have a book
To read if it was me.
Anyway
No more interesting people to
Watch
Where is the girl with my meal?

Christmas is around again

Christmas is around again

My how time has flown

I spoke to Father Christmas

I spoke to him on the phone

How are you doing I asked him

You must be very weary

No he replied I am fine

It’s a time to be happy and cheery

I don’t know what he’s on about

Christmas blows my brain

I am only just getting over last year

And now it’s around again

It’s spend, spend, and spend again

That’s all we seem to do

Don’t you think it’s too commercial now?

I do, how about you

Its ho, ho, ho, and he, he, he

And everything that’s funny

If Santa asks me what I want

I’ll say, just give me back my money

We have forgotten what Christmas is

It’s a time for family and friends

Giving love and presents

And the message that it sends

No mater what religion you follow

It’s a time for everyone to know

That we are linked together as a family

In this world where ever we go

So come on Christmas

Let the celebrations begin

Forget how much its cost

Bring on the carols lets sing

Sing the praises of Christmas

Be full of Christmas cheer

Because you know like I do

It will be back again next year
